A recipe has no soul. You, as the cook, must bring soul to the recipe. -Thomas Keller

Why "The Bear Cooks"?

The Bear Cooks, the name, is a result of my participation and success on the culinary series; MasterChef Canada season 4 (2017).

In a memorable moment, I was asked; "did someone finally poke the bear?"  The answer, if you were watching, was clearly YES!

My idea for THE BEAR COOKS was born that day.  When Chef and MasterChef Canada judge Claudio Aprile asked me that he got me focused.

That question also made me realize that in everything we do, we have to do it from a vantage point of passion, and love.  From that day forward I always remember to cook with love. .

I am incredibly proud of my achievements in the MasterChef Canada Kitchen. Some of the highlights for me are:

  • Earning a white apron in the first episode.  There was an amazing level of talent in the MasterChef Canada Kitchen that day, and I feel honoured to have been recognized as one of the best

  • Meeting, cooking for, and receiving accolades from Jamie Oliver.  Being told by one of my cooking idols that what I had done was good, was a true highlight

  • Winning the Restaurant Takeover Challenge as a team captain at Auberge du Pommier in Toronto.  I had an outstanding team with Trevor Connie and Mai Nguyen.

  • Making it far enough in the competition that my wife Jennifer was able to come and experience it with me.  Seeing her in the orchard that day, and getting to cook for her, and have her enjoy the dinner with the judges and the other families was an emotional day.
